A Green Home is built to be environmentally friendly and energy efficient. Homeowners will enjoy good indoor air quality and low utility bills.
The Central Valley is a high growth area. This year alone, over 2,000 single family homes will be built in the City of Fresno – there is no better time to engage the private sector in sustainable building practices.
To that end the City of Fresno has initiated the Green Building Demonstration Project. The project includes the construction of three single-family homes utilizing green building principals. The homes will be constructed on scattered infill residential sites throughout the central part of Fresno, and will be sold to low-income families as part of the City’s larger affordable housing new construction activities. This project is a first for Fresno and will provide a learning arena for the private building industry.
Specifically, the project will attempt to demonstrate that Green homes: 1) Have comparable construction cost to conventional homes, 2) Use significantly less energy, 3) Have market appeal to home buyers across income ranges and 4) Have reduced construction waste.
The homes will be constructed by Alvis Projects, a local green builder, and will incorporate Insulated Concrete Forms, Structurally Insulated Panels, Solar Energy Panels, built-in kitchen recycling, on-site construction recycling, energy efficient appliances and other sustainable features. The City of Fresno helped create this joint venture project and is selling city owned parcels to homebuyers and providing mortgage assistance utilizing Federal HOME funds from HUD. Each house will have three bedrooms, will total approximately 1,300 square feet and will be in the $240,000 price range.
The Environmental Protection Agency is also sponsoring the project with a $60,000 Resource Conservation Funds Grant. The grant will enable City staff, with the help of Strategic Energy Innovations, to monitor, evaluate and publicize the results of the Green performance measures.
